What are unique qualities of Teflon that make it exceptional?

Teflon insulated wire is magnificent material to use. It has gained much appreciation because of the way it deals with high temperature. These insulated wires are designed using numerous techniques that include wrapping and extrusion.

Teflon is basically a thermoplastic that is fluorinated with excellent physical, thermal and incomparable electrical properties. It is also the combination of physical properties as well as chemical properties of polytetrafluoroethylene that is effect of true fluorocarbon arrangement.
Teflon is the most suitable material for usage in internal wiring applications. Wiring products that are shielded with Teflon coating show an outstanding outcome as they are resistant to oxidation, oil, sunlight, flame heat, ozone, acids, water, gasoline alcohol, aromatic hydrocarbons and also solvents.

Polytetrafluoroethylene- it is a synthetic fluoropolymer that is found in many applications. It is a high-molecular-weight mixture that consists of carbon as well as fluorine. It is hydrophobic that means it neither consist water nor any of the water containing material. Also it has one of the low coefficients of resistance and can meet any solid.

However, the extruded type of the wire is broadly used in classification of tools as well as electronics that are available in stranded sizes of 22-24 AWG.

Extruded Teflon - insulated hook-up wire are classified into three

Type E- it is rated for having 600 volts

Type EE- it is a bit thicker Teflon coating rating as 1000 volts.

Type ET- it is very rarely used and rate as 250 volts

Teflon coated wire are available in assortment of colors. But these colors are characterized according to the scheme used by the military. These are termed as black(0), brown(1), red(2), orange(3), yellow(4), green(5), blue(6), violet(7), gray(8), and white(9).  It is widely used in the areas like military harassing, power Supply Lead Wire, Medical Electronics and Appliance Wiring

Usually, these Teflon insulated wires are usually plated with silver coating. Whenever used at high temperatures, tin plating dissolves into the core copper wire which makes the surface difficult to repair.  On other side silver plating has an ability to resist high temperatures for long duration of time as compared to the conventional tinning. It is to consider that it should not be placed closer to sulfur fumes such as paper, rubber bands and cardboard.

Some other benefits include-
  • Teflon silver shield wire is resistant to tarnish
  •  Nickel plating is used for temperatures above the range of 200°C
  • Nickel is difficult to repair due to exterior oxidation.
  • It is resistant to all the chemicals
  • It has lower coefficient of abrasion
  • It has an exceptional electrical properties
